well I did

well I did

a few months after we bought our house and cleared out 43+ tonnes of 'stuff' that had been left to us

the previous owner, tentatively enquired if we had found the hole in the garden

it took us a while to find the garden but once we'd cleared it, we will still hadn't found the mystery hole

a year or so in, re-laying the dangerously uneven york stone, we found one slab had the hole hidden beneath it.

quite a BIG hole: not a well, but a 20ft deep, round, brick soakaway
which had been used as more of a 'stash-away' of rubbish
some moths ago I cleared rotten bin bags of unidentifiable shit, mouldy carpets and other 'stuff' that had been thrown down it over the years.
i was seriously, half expecting to find body.

we repaired the brick mouth and since have had some railway sleepers covering it up so no-one fell down it

i had some appropriately thick glass cut by 'GX glass' of Lympne

and yesterday i asked 'S&A steel' of favershams to fabricate me a steel frame, of my design

they said it would take a week but today they phoned to say it was ready to collect already

now we just need our sparks to come back and connect the lights we've already had cabled in for some night-time illumination

not as impressive as our lovely neighbours' VERY deep well

but definitely safer and better than what we had previously
