getting paid makes me more creative

getting paid makes me more creative

we're in pre-production on an editorial shoot currently (as always)
the (ridiculously low, almost unworkable) 'budget' was being discussed through emails between my client and the PR (cc'd to me).

my client was looking to the record company to contribute to the costs (of the studio which are same as the entire budget)
the PR was saying that the record company wouldn't be able to right now and my client wrote: "we're in the same boat. cheap and cheerful is the new rock and roll"

NO it fucking isn't.

the PR's getting paid the same, the people working on the magazine are getting paid the same: the photographer's expected to pay any shortfall in the expenses and wave goodbye to any fee there might have been.

fair enough.
i know i say i take pictures because i love making pictures: it's true.
but also, when everyone else is getting paid, why am i the charity?

i'm not talking about a nice arty magazine that you wouldn't expect to get paid for.

i don't like to discuss badness in the business, but the last 4 editorial jobs i've done which include 2 cover and main feature shoots and 2 other shoots for prestige international magazines any photographer would be proud to shoot for, i've had to use my fee as expenses because budgets aren't there.

soon, photographers will fold.
especially them that rely on editorial for an income.
it's not amusing anymore...
