my favourite christmas present

at 10pm last night as we (me, mrs.perou, chris and alice) were sitting around the kitchen table, eating dinner and drinking cheerfully, the telephone rang.
'hello, is that ********* ***** farm?'
'yes', i replied.
'this is herne bay police, there are reports of shots being fired in the orchard behind you, we wondered if you knew anything about that?'
'i have a shotgun. i haven't been letting rip with it though and i haven't heard any shooting'.
'probably just some ***** lamping then. thanks for your time. goodbye'.
in the night i woke suddenly from a very detailed dream where i was really enjoying a long pee after a long, long wait.
i woke convinced that i was wetting the bed and ran to the toilet.
after checking i hadn't actually wet our bed, i wondered how mrs.perou had managed to sleep through all the commotion and checked the time.
the digital alarm clock was flashing 2.48am
it doesn't usually flash at all.
i said something to mrs.perou to see if i could interrupt her slumber but she was unconscious.
looking out of the window, i realised all the street lights across the fields on the motorway were pulsating too.
somehow, in my confused half awakeness, i managed to convince myself that there was an alien invasion happening and i was the only one in the house not to have been knocked out somehow.
a very confused while later, i realised we were not amidst an alien invasion, but a power cut.
my 2nd favourite present
i'm good at buying myself presents.
pure gold gucci.
stayed without power till 2pm after several heated phone calls.
took 2hrs to clean 4 windows but the difference to the views from the sitting room and the library is amazing.
chris, alice and scarlet left.
crispin and sangeeta arrived.
then harry, jane, polly, fred and oscar did too.
i like having friends here: house feels more alive when it's full of people.
