started the day getting driven around belize city by a security driver.
stopped some times to take some photos.

land crabs
there are tons of blue 'land crabs' that come out of holes in the grass verges.
i thought i was being attacked by a scorpion the first time one accidentally popped his head out while i was standing next to his hole.
apparently you can eat them.

decided that being driven around was too frustrating and took to the streets on foot,
doing that thing you're told NOT to do.
DO NOT WALK ROUND TOWN WITH AN OBVIOUSLY EXPENSIVE LOOKING CAMERA ON YOUR SHOULDER.

walking into downtown seemed like a good idea
till the kid i walked past, who was wielding a machete, started following me down the street.
i doubled back, past the justice courts (where there were lots of police) and it ended well (obviously, or i wouldn't be writing this now).

a cloudy day in belize
met the rest of our crew and drove over to see 'shyne' at his place.
after lunch we all went 10miles out to sea, in boats and swam amongst sting rays (and the odd shark).
weird to be so far out to sea and still be able to stand up in shallow, warm water.
SUPER hard day at the office.

the cost of paradise
back at dusk for more stories from one of shyne's security.
the rough guide to rough belize.
apparently anyone can get an illegal glock for $50 US in guatemala and a miltary grade grenade for $100 US.
the gangs here like to throw grenades at each other
and in belize, gang members also make their own homemade guns out of bits of old bicycle frames.
anyone can apply for a handgun license here and if you kill someone defending yourself, it's ok.
all they have to do is enter your property and that's just cause.
or try to rob you in the street with a gun or just a knife.
unfortunately the security escort had just deleted the picture of the headless girl (that was discovered on the highway the day before we arrived) from his phone.
but he's going to bring me in some pictures of the homemade guns.
it's not safe to be on the street past 5pm
the street robbers here do not discriminate between tourists and locals.
equal opportunities for all.
the school children are as likely to get robbed on their way to school at 7am.
