mystery hole (NOT a glory hole)

sometime after we took over this place, the former lady of the house asked us if we had found the 'hole in the yard' yet?

it was little cryptic and she didn't go into further details.

a year ago i found it

and left it till today

as we're lifting the broken york stone, lying at various angles other than flat and replacing it, it was time to address the mystery hole...

i had tried to sort out the contents of mystery hole before, with a grappling hook and rope.

i did manage to pull out about 20 sq meters of rotten, soaking, brown carpet

but the rotten bin bags of household waste that had been dumped down there needed a more hands on approach

yes: our (at least) 20ft deep, brick-built, soak away had been used as a rubbish dump for a long time.

i COULD have just covered it over but I don't like the idea of a rubbish dump in my soak away so I worked out a way of securing a ladder so it wouldn't fall in, with me attached to it, if the 'floor' gave way

spent today re-bagging and climbing out a small hole with 25 bin bags of, ostensibly, shit.

i ALMOST expected to find body parts in rotten bin bags

happily not though

i don't know how much further down the bottom is but I cleared 5ft until I got to mainly mud and broken glass

i ran out of ladder and didn't fancy the floor giving way when I started digging further

it's deep.

last time I was photographed looking daft coming out a hole was when we were doing the drains at the bunker
