day of the pigs

day of the pigs

my brother and sister-in-law were waiting outside the house when i got up at 7.
freeeezing.

drove over to rob's and picked up him and his trailer.
came back to farm and loaded up the pigs.
"say goodbye to pigs, boys"
"goodbye pigs"

drove 11 (ish) miles to the abbatoir.
although this pig looks traumatised in this picture, he wasn't.
it's a small family run slaughter-house: very causal and calm.

people have been speculating that it would be hard for me to send the pigs to their death, especially after naming and befriending them.
but it really wasn't.
they had a happy life.
it wasn't so long-lived, but i guess that's all relative.

two things made me sad at the abbatoir:
considering WWII concentration camps and the genocide that saw people treated like animals.

and the suckling pig that was there to be slaughtered.
it didn't get a chance to enjoy any good times...
i won't ever kill our animals that young.

it seemed really wrong: like killing a child.
:(

dropped rob and his trailer back at his place.
returned to farm to cut a few lawns and catch up on some photo work.

my mum kindly emailed me to tell me that she thinks i'm having a midlife crisis and that i don't appear to value all that i have here in england.
just because i'm middle aged doesn't make my everyday crises 'mid-life'.
i DO appreciate all i have and those i care about here...can't criticise me for wanting more than what i've got though.
i'm too young to retire.

the perou-mobile has had it's engine rebuilt during my little trip away...it's still fuckered...and the engine will be rebuilt again while i'm away next.
