room with a view

i'm in tokyo.

:)

this is the view from my hotel window.
i like it.
i, am soo tired.
just forced myself awake.
it's 6.30pm in tokyo...but only 9.30am (back 8hrs) in london.
if i wasn't feeling bad on the plane, i do now.

this morning (yesterday?) the car driver that took me and frances to heathrow was a 'McQueen': first cousin to the fashion designer 'alexander mcqueen'.
had an interesting drive chatting about gypsies, essex, his dad's philosophy of 'i'm rich, you're not: go and earn your own' and how he (the driver) was stabbed in the lung when he used to manage a pub (in essex, by gypsies).
i love meeting people with stories to share.
i'm going off essex.

on the plane, i took the liberty of asking (the enormous professional thai kick-boxer who was) the only person with four seats to himself if i could sleep on the floor while he slept across the seats.
the gentle giant: he very kindly said yes and that made all the difference.
watched 'league of gentlemen apocalypse' on the plane which was disappointingly unfunny.
also watched a bit of a really duff film called 'festival' about the edinburgh festival.

haruo picked us up at narita and brought us back into tokyo.
frances slept through the amazing panoramic drive in, over the rainbow bridge.
it's been 5years since i've been here: i don't why it's taken so long to get back, but i immediately feel at home and relaxed: caught myself taking some deep breaths, trying to suck the city back in my lungs.

checking in, haruo left his friend's car running, unattended, with the keys in the ignition.
i asked him if it's ok to be walking around tokyo with an expensive camera on my shoulder: 'yes, of course: japanese people be scared of you: tall western guy: no trouble'.
i'm reminded how gentle people are here and how low street crime is.
how pleasantly unlike london it is.
how unlike essex.
